Benedcit was born in Nausia near Spoleto, Italy. He lived outside the city of Rome as a child. His parents were wealthy and wanted him to work in the government, so Benedict got a good education. When Benedict was older, he went to Rome and was shocked that Rome was in chaos. He left Rome and went to live in a cave in Subiaco, where he could live in peace and pray to god. He then created 12 monasteries - places where men and women could both work and worship God in peace. One of the monasteries was called Monte Cassino. But, there were rules for being a monk. The Rules
1. As a monk, they had to be obedient and be poor.
2. They were not allowed to marry.
3. Monks farmed, cared for the sick, wrote books, cooked, cleaned and taught people who wanted to become monks.
Benedict predicted the hour of his death. He died on March 21, 547 AD.
